Dear ***********, Thank you for contacting me regarding Social Security. I appreciate your taking the time to share your views with me. Protecting Social Security for current and future beneficiaries is one of my top priorities. This year, Social Security’s pay out to beneficiaries is expected to exceed its total income, and the program will begin to draw on trust fund reserves it has accumulated over its 87-year history. While the program maintains roughly $2.9 trillion in trust fund reserves, the latest annual report from the trustees of Social Security indicates that these funds will be depleted by 2034. When that happens, with no reforms to the system, beneficiaries will begin to see decreases in their benefits. I oppose changes to Social Security for those who already receive its benefits or will receive benefits soon. However, if we wish to preserve the program for future generations, we must address Social Security’s looming shortfall. Numerous bills have been introduced that take varying approaches to reform of Social Security. In the Senate, these bills are referred to the Finance Committee for consideration, of which I am a member. You may be assured I will keep your thoughts in mind should legislation affecting Social Security come before the Finance Committee. Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me.
