Dear Mr. American TV,

Thank you for writing to share your thoughts regarding tariffs. I appreciate hearing from you.

Like you, I am outraged by the incredibly irresponsible and misguided tariff policies pursued by the Trump administration. President Trump’s reckless imposition of unilateral tariffs on our trading partners is continuing to strain diplomatic relations, exacerbating inflation and the affordability crisis, creating turmoil in our stock market, depleting American’s pensions and retirement savings, reducing faith in the American financial system, and raising costs for American families.

The harmful consequences of Trump’s reckless tariffs across the American economy include price hikes, layoffs, empty store shelves, and more. The stakes are particularly high for ports in California. As you may know, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach — which receive 40 percent of the nation’s maritime imports — are expected to see an 18 percent decrease in overall volume compared to the previous fiscal year.

You may be pleased to know that on April 3, 2025, the Senate passed S.J. Res. 37, aimed at overturning President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. During the debate for S.J. Res. 37, I spoke at length on the Senate floor in opposition to the Trump administration’s harmful tariffs and against Republican efforts to use this historic tax hike on American consumers to offset tax cuts for the wealthy few. Unfortunately, Speaker Johnson has indicated House Republicans have no intention of voting on S.J. Res. 37.

Please know that I will continue working to advance trade policies that protect American jobs, strengthen our global competitiveness, and prioritize economic growth.
